Chapter 22

 TWENTY-TWO

Trigger slowly opened his eyes. He wasn’t sure what time he had finally made it back to his room the night before, but he could tell he was not successful in getting changed judging from the wrinkled tan t-shirt and pants he was half wearing. It had been a week since the end of the Radicals as a threat to Erusea, and with that came the monumental amount of work acting as a liaison between the Princess and the Osean Military. As much as he loved being around Cossette, he was growing weary of the constant dog and pony shows that his current position was entailing, often spending uncomfortable amounts of time with high ranking individuals of both the Osean and Erusean militaries regarding troop movements and other logistical items that made the pilots head hurt to think about. A shifting next to him in the bed caught his attention. Gently lifting the covers, he could see an equally half-dressed Cossette sound asleep next to him.

It seems like forever since we could do this. Trigger thought to himself as he watched her sleeping.

For as much work as he had, he didn’t envy her at all. She had been working almost nonstop even more than he had. The few private moments the two were able to have, Trigger could see that she was working off nothing more than caffeine and an iron willpower. It was admirable to a point, but Trigger was ecstatic to see she was resting for possibly the first time that week.

Trigger’s attention was turned to a movement outside his room, followed by a gentle rap on the door a second later. Gingerly not to disturb Cossette, he slid out of the bed and lightly stepped his way to the door, taking care to not make an undue amount of noise. He opened the door and found Cossette’s head aid, Gretchen, patiently waiting for him.

He groggily rubbed his face “Can I help you ma’am?” He asked, stifling a yawn.

Gretchen said nothing, then craned her neck to peer around Trigger’s frame. He could see a smirk crack across her face as she turned her attention back towards the pilot.

“Per the Princess’ request, I was told to wake our guest at this time in the event you were sleeping in unusually late. That is all” she said, making an about face and walking down the hall.

Weird, I wonder what that. Trigger paused.

His heart skipped a beat as he slowly turned his attention back towards the bed.

To his relief, From the doorway Cossette was entirely concealed.

There’s no way that old maid could know… could she? Trigger was troubled by the thought.

Trigger shut the door, louder than he intended. He could hear a yawn and Cossette sat up in bed groggily “What time is it?” she asked, still half asleep.

“About half past nine.” Trigger replied softly, taking a seat on the bed next to her.

She smiled at him still half asleep, Trigger took care and brushed a bang of hair from her face. Within a moment however, he could see her fully wake up to the situation.

“I’m in your room.” She said matter-of-factly

“That appears to be the case.” Trigger replied

“I slept here.”

“Evidence pointing to that.” Trigger confirmed, smirking.

Shit!” she hissed, causing Trigger to chuckle. “Not so fun when the shoes on the other foot is it?” He teased.

“Did anyone see me in here?” She asked concerned. “Probably not.” Trigger replied. Though that maid is onto something. It tugged at the back of his mind.

“Sorry I snuck in here last night. I just got so distracted and I haven’t been sleeping well and –“ Cossette said rapidly, pausing when Trigger put a reassuring hand on her arm. “Its fine, do you hear me complaining?” He said half-jokingly.

“No, I guess not.” She replied sheepishly. He embraced her in a hug, “Want to tell me what’s bothering you?” He whispered in her ear.

She gently pushed him away and sighed. “Oh, just another letter from a wannabe suitor, Alex.” She said dismissively.

“Well did you write him back and say your already taken? Besides I don’t think he could compete with these!” Trigger said flexing his biceps, Cossette rolled her eyes unamused at his joke. “Unfortunately, it’s not nearly that easy. His Father is a senior executive at a Belkan arms manufacturing firm. Not only did he help arm the Erusean Military after the reconstruction, but he also had a personal working relationship with my father.”

“Ok, I’m not sure I’m entirely following here. Surely, we’re past the arranged marriage time, right?” Trigger asked confused.

“That’s the thing. Erusea only has a patriarchal monarchy, and what that letter alluded to was his families grand idea to marry into my family, and have a ‘Puppet’ King.” Cossette explained.

“Well that’s pretty slimy.” Trigger said shrugging.

“Tell me about it. It’s only a matter of the Parliament changing our constitution anyways. I do believe I have their support in that realm.” Cossette reassured Trigger.

“So, his offer will mean nothing then. I don’t see what the issue is that’s bothering you?” Trigger asked

“Well the thing is… He’s coming to the Victory Ball we’re hosting. I knew we would only get minor diplomats but his father and him got an invitation and his letter ended with him ‘excited to meet me’.” She said annoyed.

“Well, what is it, one night? I’m sure you can play nice for that long at least?” Trigger said reassuringly.

“Can I? I don’t know, I think your sarcasm is rubbing off on me.” Cossette replied.

“Whose prince Charming anyways?” Trigger asked.

“Alexander Schmidt. Aside from that I don’t know a whole lot about him, nor do I care to.” Cossette explained.

“Sounds like one of those evil stereotypical Belkans. I’d be worried about more conspiracies.” Trigger joked.

“Well, not all Belkans are bad, Georg and Tabloid were good people.” Cossette defended.

“One of those was a member of a penal unit for a reason Cossette. I think our definitions might be a bit skewed.” Trigger said flatly. “So, were you, what’s your point?” Cossette shot back. “Hey, I belonged there, Tabloid even more than me!” Trigger said in mock defense, playing it up enough to defuse Cossette’s anger.

“Fine, whatever mister war criminal, go get your princess some coffee.” Cossette ordered.

“Gladly” Trigger replied, walking over to a small coffee machine in his room. He tore open a packet of coffee grounds and poured it into the machine. Seconds later he could hear the water loudly boil and watched as a thin trickle of coffee started filled the glass carafe.

“So how many people are supposed to be attending this shindig tonight?” Trigger asked, rummaging around a cabinet for clean coffee mugs.

“I honestly don’t know; I was not the one who planned it. My guess is a few hundred?”

“Jesus, what kind of people did you invite?”

“The standard fare, Mostly military leaders from both of our countries, with extended invitations to other officers of affiliated countries. As well as diplomats, politicians, nobles and lords of the region.” Cossette explained, tying her hair up in a ponytail and straightening her wrinkled dress shirt.

Trigger placed two mugs on the counter next to the machine and walked over to his closet, pulling out his service coat.

“Is that what you’re going in tonight?” Cossette asked, watching from the bed.

“Don’t really have much options. I don’t have a mess dress uniform because I was too cheap and wasn’t in the active duty air force long enough for a function like this.” Trigger explained, brushing lint off the jacket’s sleeve.

“Really? I thought this kind of pomp and ceremony was common for militaries.”

“Yeah, not for an operations squadron. Pretty much my uniform consisted of either camouflage fatigues or the flight suit. So much easier to wear than this. Kind of hard to screw up zippers and Velcro.” Trigger joked.

Cossette shook her head and walked over to the coffee maker and poured herself a cup.

“What are you going to be wearing tonight?” Trigger asked

“oh, you’ll see” Cossette said coyly. “Let me guess, something expensive, will take hours to put on and comes from some foreign designer I’ve never heard of?” Trigger teased. “Do you know any fashion designers?” Cossette interjected. “Uhh, No. But that’s beside the point!” Trigger said.

“Well it takes all the fun out of it If I tell you beforehand. You’re just going to have to wait until tonight to see it.” Cossette chided. “And besides, it may take hours to put on but, it’s a lot more fun to take off.” She winked.

Trigger parked his car in front of the bases wing operations building. Trigger was hoping the tour the next day would get him better acquainted with the base, despite working alongside Andres for the previous handful of weeks, Trigger was barely knowledgeable in getting from the front gate to Andre’s office without getting too lost.

At least their building numbering makes as much sense as ours does. Trigger thought as he saw the mix-mash of numbering along the corners of the buildings he passed. Despite different countries, histories, and continents, they still suck at planning out a base; Imagine that. He smirked at the thought.

Arriving at the front desk he waited for an Erusean to provide him a temporary badge and he walked into the main hall of the building. A dull sound could be heard as Erusean Air Force personnel went through their normal tasks to complete their mission. His mission from Cossette however was laughably simpler than that of running multiple fighter squadrons; To personally deliver documents to Colonel Andre that she had signed. Normally this was a task reserved for official couriers of the Erusean Military, but Cossette had other plans in mind when she assigned Trigger to the task.

The week prior, Trigger had confided in Cossette his and Asher’s theory regarding Andre. She was skeptical due to the lack of evidence but agreed to have the Colonel put under more scrutiny as a precaution.

When I heard her say that, I thought it would be more out of a spy movie. Not this. Trigger thought to himself as he made his way towards the elevators closest to the colonel’s office.

A short ride later, Trigger found himself in a quieter upper floor of the building.

As he drew closer to the office, he could hear a familiar voice coming from a darkened office.

“Yes, I know about that, but I don’t see how Jean Louis fuckup is any of my concern!” Trigger could hear the voice shout annoyed, Trigger found the responsible room, the door only half shut. From the hallway Trigger continued to eavesdrop.

Fine, Whatever, It’s just one tiny piece. Overall, it won’t be a big deal. Just make sure its Matias’ ass instead of mine.”  The voice spat apathetically.

Allowing his curiosity to get the better of him, and to confirm his theory, he lightly tapped on the door and poked his head inside.

The office had clearly not been in use for some time, the plastic plants were covered in cobwebs and a present layer of dust covered everything. Behind an aging cheap plywood desk sat a visibly surprised Asher holding a phone.

“Hey! I gotta go, just make sure Charon gets the word.” He said rapidly before hanging up and standing to greet Trigger.

“Hey man! What the hell brings you here?” Asher asked flustered, looking to Trigger like a kid who had been caught with his hand in the cookie jar.

“Not much, just need to talk to the Colonel. What was that about?” Trigger asked.

He could see Asher pale briefly.

“Well its quite embarrassing actually. I was talking with another squadron commander about the status of getting our Vipers upgraded, and the vendor we were going to use for the fire controls backed out at the last minute.” Asher said embarrassed

“Ah, Mid-Life upgrades finally?” Trigger pressed

“Yep. Odds are we won’t have enough time to get to the strength we had pre-war so, we’re making do.” Asher replied.

“So why the dingy office?” Trigger asked

Asher chuckled and held up the plastic handset. “My office doesn’t have a secure phone but this one did. Go figure.”

“So, you said you needed to talk to the Colonel? What about?” Asher asked

“Just dropping off some documents, Pretty basic stuff. If nothing else, it gives me more chance to find out what his actual motivations may be going forward.” Trigger replied.

“Well unfortunately, your shit out of luck if you wanted to see him in person. I think he left half an hour ago.” Asher replied.

“Crap. Well I’ll just leave this at the front desk, and they can put it in a secure area for the Colonel then until he gets back.” Trigger replied, making his way towards the door.

“Hey Trigger! Before you go, what’s your plans for tonight?” Asher asked

“Im not drinking with you guys again if that’s what you want. I got a reaming last time I did!” Trigger joked.

“Well damn, A few of us at the 163rd were going to go out to celebrate while all the Brass is at that party the Princess is hosting. If you change your mind your welcome to join us!” Asher invited.

“I’d love to but, unfortunately I’m already committed to going to the big party tonight instead. Duty calls” Trigger replied apologetically.

“Well a rain-check it is then Trigger. Have a good one!” Asher shouted after him.

***
Trigger stood in front of the Palace in his service dress uniform and looked out to the setting sun, the horizon glowed a dull orange behind the Farbanti coast skyline. He was still early, having only arrived at the palace in enough time to shower and get changed before the Princesses stewards ushered him to the guest staging area. Behind the wrought iron gates Trigger could see the palaces staff rushing around making final preparations as well as a formal military unit standing guard.

Trigger studied their gaudy adorned uniforms, a black trouser and bright white coat, that stood in contrast to the black HK-33 rifles slung to their chests.

As more guests arrived, Trigger could hear the shrill sound of a fanfare playing. In a choreographed move, the soldiers rushed to the gate and pulled it open, soon lights started lighting the palace and banners were unfurled along the sides of the building as the fanfare concluded seconds later.

Within a moment, Trigger watched a large man waddle confidently forward, aided by his cane, towards the Palace entrance. He was flanked by a taller, younger, and fitter man as well as a small cadre of what Trigger assumed were aid’s following their bosses lead. Taking that as an invitation, other guests followed him into the venue.

Trigger took great amusement watching the wave of people from the sidelines. While he was never one for large gatherings, he was finding it interesting to see how many different countries militaries were in attendance to the nights festivities.

He started with Osea. Trigger could see members of almost every service in the Osean Defense Forces had members attending. The Army’s units in Farbanti had all sent a small collection of their men as representatives, wearing their service dress consisting of deep blue pants, a black service coat and beret. Trigger couldn’t recognize any of the Osean Soldiers unit affiliations, nor did he recognize any from the raid the week prior.

As well as the Osean Army’s representatives, Trigger saw the bright white ‘chokers’ of the Osean Maritime Defense Force representatives, standing out like a sore thumb in the crowd of tuxedos and dark colors. Trigger had assumed that the Navy’s representatives were officers from the destroyer squadron that was parked off the coast of Farbanti, though he didn’t press for answers when Cossette had told him the days prior of the guests.

Trigger still held some contempt against the Osean surface navy following his incarceration in Zapland. After his kangaroo show trial was completed, he was thrown aboard the aging Osean missile frigate Garnet for his ride to Zapland. On top of the general malaise that seemed to follow the crew regarding their mission, the Officers aboard the Garnet had chosen to take their frustrations out on Trigger while he was confined to the Brig of the ship. While he was never assaulted, He did miss multiple rations of his bread and water in the voyage. While his situation in Zapland was not much better, Trigger chalked that up more to the incompetence of the warden over actual malice. It was his most recent run in with the Osean surface navy, but far from his only reason for disliking them.

He shook his head and put it out of his mind. Their pilots are top notch, I can at least say that in their defense as a branch. He chuckled to himself as he continued to look at the stream of people walking in. Off in the distance, Trigger could hear a big band starting to play a rapid swing tune for the guests. Before deciding to walk in himself, Trigger had taken account of multiple officers of the Osean Air Defense Force in their blue suits, the Osean Marine Corps in their ‘Dress Blues’, Members of the Usean Air Force, as well as multiple branches from Yuktobania being represented as well as Belka, Estovakia, Emmeria, North Point and dozens of other smaller countries that Erusea had ties to in some way.

Trigger climbed the steps and saw the main hall in its entire glory. The walls glowed with a golden hue as the full decadence of the Erusean Royal Family was put on display. Before Trigger could enter however, he was stopped by a palace butler who Trigger hadn’t seen before.

“Do you have an Invitation sir?” the butler snobbishly asked

“Of course, it’s right here-“ Trigger paused as he patted the breast pocket of his service coat. Shit, did I really forget it in my room? He was only slightly relieved feeling the other item however was still snugly secured in its case. “-I’m sorry, I’ve seemed to have forgotten it” Trigger chuckled apologetically.

“Well if that’s the case sir, I do apologize but you’re not permitted in without an invitation.” The man chastised

Annoyed now, Trigger raised his eyebrow and gestured to the other guests. “They aren’t being stopped, why me?”

“Because sir, they have invitations.” The man snidely replied.

“Did you check?” Trigger asked irritated.

The man took a sharp inhale before being jostled out of the way by a smaller older military officer.

Major! I’ve been looking for you!” The officer who Trigger didn’t recognize said jovially.

“Uhh, what?” Trigger stuttered, confusion replacing his anger.

The unknown Officer put his arm around Trigger’s shoulder “Major, this man bothering you?” The man asked Trigger “Uhm well.” Trigger started to explain before being cut off again, this time by the officer jabbing a pointed finger into the butler’s chest. “You. Are you bothering my inferior?” The officer demanded.

“Well sir, he didn’t have an invitation and-“ the butler started, the Officer cut him off once again, pulling a small envelope from his pocket “God, it’s right here, can’t you read? Damn Eruseans. The Major’s with me. So, If you don’t mind, we’re going in now.” The Officer dismissed the butler, leading Trigger further into the main ballroom.

Looking to see that the butler was out of sight, the officer took his arm off of Trigger and straightened out his coat.

“Uhh, thanks for that.” Trigger said.

“Not a problem, figured this is the monthly gathering of the ‘Scumbags Anonymous’ club, so I wanted as many friendly faces in here as possible. Your age might betray it, but that ribbon rack you have, and the way you carry yourself tells me you’re a fighter jock and not one of these people.” The Officer said dismissively.  “Oh, and how rude of me, Lieutenant Colonel Tom Holt, I guess you could say I’m in the IUN-Peace Keeping Force, or at least that’s who’s paying the bills right now” Holt joked introducing himself holding out his hand. Trigger shook it and introduced himself.

“Most people just call me ‘Trigger’ though, easier that way.”

Holt nodded approvingly. “I see, well if we’re using TAC names, guess you can call me ‘Stymie’ then. Don’t ask.” “want to go get a drink?” Stymie pointing the way.

Trigger took a moment to study the senior officers uniform, unlike the Osean’s dark blue, his was a blue-grey color, on his ribbon rack Trigger recognized the Continental War Victory medal, along with awards linked to dozens of ISAF and IUN operations over the previous fifteen years.

Arriving at the bar, Stymie placed his order and turned to Trigger, “Say, I recognize your last name Trigger, do you have a younger brother or something?” he asked

“No sir, Only child.”

“Ah, I see. Odd coincidence then.” Stymie said. “Why do you ask?” Trigger asked.

“Well you see, back at the start of this war, my squadron was getting some interesting reports of an Osean fighter pilot with the same last name as you. A young lieutenant with some pretty impressive results on his first few engagements. I mean, it wasn’t just a one and done good mission like everyone gets, it was almost routine that this kid’s name was crossing our desks.”

Trigger felt a small pit form in his stomach.  “What happened to the kid?” Trigger asked, wincing, and hoping the senior pilot didn’t notice.

“Well, He got attached to some big rescue op, clearly Osea thought they had someone who could reliably pull a hat-trick and it went horridly. The VIP was killed, and it sounded like the kid was at fault. Damn shame he became damaged goods to them because he certainly had potential. Probably still rotting in a cell somewhere.” Stymie said trailing off, stirring the ice in his glass of brandy.

“Well Its all in the past now, So Trigger, what flying do you do?” Stymie asked changing the topic.

“Oh, I am currently attached to the Princess as a liaison, but before that I was flying Eagles and had started life flying F-16s.” Trigger answered

“Oh? You must have either had friends in high places, or enemies to get that position of liaison.” Stymie said jokingly. “Well the Eagles are a good platform. I flew with them and against them more times than I could count. Not Nearly as good as the Typhoon or Raptor in my honest opinion” Stymie continued.

“So, which do you fly now?” Trigger asked

“Squadron has been flying the F-22 Raptor since aught five-ish? Beautiful airframes that Osea gave us, those. I bet it could outfly and outfight Gabriel and all his Archangels if I asked it to.  Before that I was on the Typhoon and, don’t get me wrong she had quirks but if you knew how to fly her -” He clapped his hands for emphasis “-She’d take care of you.”

Trigger smirked, while he had no experience with the Typhoon, his one flight in the F-22 had taught him everything he needed to know about the stealth fighter. Damn that was cool.

The two pilots conversation was interrupted by another sounding of horns. Suddenly, over loudspeakers the booming voice of the master of ceremonies could be heard.

Ladies and gentlemen, Distinguished guests. Princess Rosa Cossette D’Elise of Erusea” he announced.

Trigger was taken aback by her.

Her golden hair seemed to have an unnatural glow to it, tied in an elegant braid, a small conservative tiara sat upon her head, twinkling with what Trigger assumed to be hundreds of small diamonds. Her dress was a darker satin blue, strapless and tied with a small bow on one side. Her porcelain skin looked flawless to Trigger.

Trigger leaned back on the bar, feeling his heart beating out of his chest.

“Hey buddy, you ok there?” Stymie asked confused at the reaction

Triggers mouth felt dry, “Oh yeah, fine” he lied.

Stymie chuckled, “If I didn’t know any better, I’d say you were smitten with the young lady.” He teased.

“Nothing like that. Besides it would never work out.” Trigger lied.

“Oh bah, live a little while your young! Might even get you a new callsign if you actually seal the deal.” Stymie jested, slugging Trigger in the arm.

“Well, Trigger, it’s been pleasant talking to you, I do have to wander off and make my appearances elsewhere.” Stymie apologized excusing himself. “Oh, but before I forget Major, what squadron you were with?” Stymie asked. “I was in the 124th Tactical Fighter Squadron.”

“Oh Ok, Strider I believe? Your former Group Commander was a solid pilot. I should have probably added I’m the Deputy Commander for the 118th Tactical Fighter Wing out of North Point. If you ever are looking to jump to the IUN full time, drop us a packet.” He said before walking off into the crowd.

Trigger furrowed his brow, the unit sounded familiar to him, but he couldn’t place why. I’ll just have to keep that in mind, I guess. He shrugged.

Trigger watched from the bar as the crowd parted for Cossette as she made her way to the center of the room, where an officer holding a microphone awaited her.

Gracefully she took the microphone and tapped it three times. “Is this thing on?” she said jokingly, garnering a lukewarm chuckle from the crowd.

“Ladies and Gentlemen, it is my pleasure to welcome you all to my home in the capital of our great nation of Erusea. As all of you are aware, this past year has been met with turmoil and strife, and I would go remise without accepting my part in causing all that pain. However, I host you all tonight in the hopes of being able to extend an olive branch to all our neighbors, near to our borders and far, to work together and move forward from this conflict and carry on together to a brighter future.”

She paused for a moment before continuing.

“I do apologize if this speech is a bit rambling, I have yet to find another speech writer.” She joked

“So, in conclusion, welcome to our great nation and enjoy your night, To Erusea!” She cheered to another mild reception in the crowd.

The band director, sensing the mood of the room quickly set the band in motion, playing another rag time tune to distract from the speech.

Well that could have gone better Trigger thought as he took a sip of cola from his glass.

A murmur carried through the crowd as the Princess moved out of the center of attention. It was a mix of voices that Trigger had a hard time distinguishing, but he could tell Cossette’s speech was not well received.

I should probably go see how she’s doing. Trigger thought to himself as he made his way towards the last place he saw Cossette.

Trying to be as polite as he possibly could moving through the mass of people, Trigger thought of ways he could approach the Princess.

Well we do technically work together, that should be an easy enough excuse

Nearby he could hear a voice over the others, unable to hear what it was saying he pushed it out of his mind.

As he got closer to the far end of the ballroom where he thought he saw Cossette, there was no one.

Trigger looked around, trying to be as discrete as possible.

Where could she

Trigger was thrown to the ground as someone pushed into the back of him.

Staring at the ground collecting himself, he could hear the voice again “Scheisse!” it hissed.

Turning around he found a hand reaching out to him. Trigger took it and brushed himself off

Entschuldigung, ich muss ein besseres Bewusstsein haben. Geht es dir gut?” the man asked.

Trigger studied the man. Wearing a black tuxedo, He stood a head taller than Trigger, with short cropped blond hair and sharp features. His eyes had a certain intensity that unnerved Trigger.

A Belkan? Trigger thought, clearing his throat.

Ja, ich bin gut” Trigger replied in a flawed Belkan, surprising the man.

Sie bist ein Belkan?” the man asked curious

Es ist kompliziert. Nord-Osea ist wunderbar zu dieser Jahreszeit” Trigger replied, The man’s face briefly flashed a view of contempt upon hearing the word ‘Nord-Osea’. Bingo Trigger thought.

The state of North Osea was formerly Belkan controlled territory, and most of the locals he met while stationed in the region still called it by its original name Süd-Belka, or ‘South Belka’.

Trigger cleared his throat. “Wie wäre es, wenn wir zum Wohle der anderen Gäste Common sprechen?” Trigger suggested.

“Of course, it would be my pleasure, and you are exactly?” The man replied flawlessly.

Trigger introduced himself, “I see. My name is Schmidt, were you looking for someone Major?” The man introduced himself.

“Something like that.” Trigger replied, Schmidt nodded and bowed slightly “I see, well if you wouldn’t mind, I was looking for someone too. I better see off to her.” Before making an about face and walking away.

“Wait, Herr Schmidt, who exactly are you looking for?” Trigger asked

“Well that would be my future bride of course.” Schmidt replied in a half joking tone over his shoulder.

Something snapped within Trigger in that moment.

“And what if she doesn’t want you?” He asked, voice slightly louder than he intended. Stopping mid stride, Schmidt turned back.

“I don’t believe I heard you correctly.” He snarled.

“I said. What if she doesn’t want you?” Trigger replied closing the distance between himself and the larger man.

“Major I don’t know what you think you know. But you have no right saying that right now.” Schmidt growled.

Triggers blood was boiling. It was a feeling he hadn’t had outside of the cockpit before. While the equipment had changed the rules were still the same as a dogfight.

Trigger chuckled “Well I’m just saying. You’re talking a big game for someone who just showed up.”

“And you’re not doing the same Major? What would an Osean want with the Princess anyways? Didn’t you just finish a war with her?” Schmidt interrogated.

“I’ve been working alongside the Princess for a few months now, and this is the first time I’ve even heard of you. So, what makes you think she wants you?” Trigger shot back, balling his fist.

Schmidt got into the face of Trigger, towering over him “Because I’m not some no name Arschloch like yourself.” He hissed.

Dostatochno!” a booming voice demanded, interrupting the two men. Trigger looked over to see an older bearded man in a double-breasted coat, gold belt and a gold set of shoulder boards storming towards them.

Admiral Borodin, derzhites' podal'she!” Schmidt hissed; Trigger guessed the language was Yuktobanian but was unsure.

The unknown officer backhanded the much larger Schmidt sending him backwards.

Ty yebanyy pozor, Aleksandr!” The Officer bellowed, in the same breath turning his attention towards Trigger. “And You! Who the hell do you think you are to interrupt the party for all these people?” He bellowed at a confused Trigger.

Trigger took a deep breath and stepped back from Schmidt who was still collecting himself off the floor, a handful of other party guests helping him up.

Trigger lowered his head apologetically. “Excuse me for that sir, that was my fault”

Clearly” Schmidt spat

Not. Another. Word. Alexander. Your father and I will have words after this.” The bearded officer growled, attention still on Trigger.

A small crowed had formed around the scene, pushing his way through was Colonel Andre. “What is the meaning of this?” he demanded, looking at the three men.

Trigger looked and shrugged “Well you see-“

“Shut up.” Andre barked. “Admiral Borodin, you are a guest here, I do expect you to behave accordingly.”

The bearded Borodin’s mood switched immediately seeing the Erusean officer.

“Of course, Emmanuel! You know how I am; I see these two mal’chiki arguing and I felt the need to step in to preserve the young Rosa’s party.” The Admiral defended himself.

“I won’t have any of that here!” Andre ordered.

Seconds later the heavy-set man Trigger had seen earlier elbowed his way to the scene. “Alexander! Komm jetzt her!” He bellowed.

“Ja Vater!” the younger man rushed to the older man’s side.

Andre, waiting for the Schmidt’s to depart grabbed Trigger by the arm and led him through a door out of the ball room.

The two men walked in silence through the corridors until they had reached a door leading to the outside of the Palace.

Andre jabbed a finger into Trigger’s chest.

“Major, you have been a thorn in my side since you came here but this is too far. I cannot allow someone with your maturity to be on the personal staff of the Princess. It is inconceivable that Osea would send us someone like you to do a liaison role such as this.” Andre yelled.

Trigger took a breath to compose himself. “Well Colonel, I could say the same about you.” Trigger shot back.

Andre squinted. “How do you figure Major?”

“A week ago, during the Air Raid. Where the hell where you?” Trigger interrogated.

“I was at the Palace, waiting to brief the Princess” He replied

“Bullshit. I asked. You were MIA for over an hour before you showed up to the Palace!”

Who told you that?” Andre growled.

Trigger snorted “Let’s just say I have someone on the inside.” He taunted.

In a flash, Andre had grabbed Triggers coat by the lapel, Trigger saw the anger written plainly on the man’s face “Why’d you do it?” Trigger asked to buy himself some time. Even if I have twenty years on this geezer, I shouldn’t do this half assed.

Andre was Snarling and raised his fist to eye level with Trigger, “Was it because of Sophie?” Trigger jabbed again.

You leave her name out of your mouth connard!” Andre demanded; the look of hate had been replaced by pain.

“I was told everything about her. I know about your daughter and how she was a Tomcat pilot like you-” Trigger was cutoff from a blow to the mouth. It was hard but there wasn’t the follow through he had expected. Touched a nerve I see.

Trigger spit a wad of saliva and blood before continuing. “-I know she was a Tomcat pilot like you and was even in your old Squadron. And-“

“ENOUGH!” Andre bellowed, releasing Trigger. “Don’t you dare speak another word about my Sophie, you already killed her once you son of a bitch!” Andre yelled.

Trigger took a second to straighten his jacked, seeing the fight was taken out of the senior Erusean.

“So, what? Princess starts the war; you lose your daughter and you decide to fake an air raid to try to?” Trigger asked.

you don’t know a damn thing Trigger.”

“Try me.”

“In your investigation, did you happen to see what that days significance was to me?”

“Lemme guess? Dogs birthday?”

Andre shook his head, wiping a tear from his cheek. “It was my Anniversary. I lost my wife over twenty years ago. I just lost my daughter. You’ll have to excuse me if I chose to spend that day with the last pieces of my family I have left.”

Trigger frowned. It was not what he had expected, while he knew about Andre’s personal history, he had missed that detail. “I am… so sorry Colonel.” Trigger said sheepishly

“Why would you be? You don’t care. Clearly you think I was responsible.”

“So why didn’t you tell anyone?” Trigger asked

“Because what business of it is theirs?” Andre demanded.

“Fair enough…” Trigger said, voice trailing off.

“You know Trigger… She was a better daughter than any Father could ask for. She was smart, brave, had her mother’s humor and looks but I guess my stubbornness. Instead of having a wild side like most girls around that age she was stayed at the Air Base hanging around the aircraft. Even without my last name she was a shoe in for the Academy. One of the top cadets in her class. I was so proud when she was assigned to my old squadron. She was a natural I hear.” His voice trailed off as a smile formed across his face at the memory.

“I can still remember the last time I talked with her. A few days before she flew against you… She was so giddy; I mean you wouldn’t have known she was talking about her eighth victory if you were not paying attention.” He concluded, tears falling down his face.

Trigger reached out to console the man but stepped back and chose to remain silent.

“Trigger… just go back to the party and, if you don’t mind, pretend this talk never occurred.”

“Gladly sir.”

***

Trigger held a bag of ice to his cheek, It had been a couple of hours since his confrontation with Andre and his face had started to bruise from the hit. Damn you Old Man strength! Trigger cursed.

Of all the victory balls, in all the foreign countries, and you just had to walk into mine.” A familiar voice spoke next to him, catching his attention.

Trigger looked to his side. “Cossette?” he asked, he looked over to see her still in the same dress as before. Her blue eyes twinkled in the dim light of the ballroom. He could see a small golden necklace on her neck that he had gifted her while the two were in Selatapura.

She winked at him and held a finger up to her lips. “Remember, we don’t actually know each other like that.” She reminded him. “Oh yeah. Having fun rubbing elbows with all the rich and powerful tonight?” He asked.

“Well, at least the B team that showed up tonight, yes. What happened there?” She asked pointing out the bag of ice.

“Uhh, Long story. There was a slight disagreement where my face and the Colonels fist needed to be.”

 “You didn’t.” She said flatly.

“No, and I didn’t hit Schmidt either.”

“What do you mean ‘I didn’t hit Schmidt either’; What have you been doing?! Which one did you hit?” Cossette demanded.

“Apparently I have a magnetic personality to cause problems. What can I say?” Trigger shrugged.

Cossette groaned and rubbed her face “Well if nothing else, it gets their mind off my terrible performance.” She said defeated.

“Well the bands helping with that too.” Trigger added.

Oh yay, the one unit to not lose anyone in my military was the Jazz Band…. I feel so blessed.” Cossette shot back sarcastically.

“But they are pretty good though.” Trigger defended, which was met by a soft hit on the arm from Cossette. “Ouch! Hey, wounded man here!” Trigger teased.

Cossette shook her head. “I can’t take you, anywhere can I?” She asked rhetorically.

“No, But maybe I can take you to the dance floor?” Trigger asked slyly.

“Smooth, but maybe we save that for later tonight.” Cossette replied tactfully.

“You never did say which Schmidt you hit. Fatty or the Tall one?” Cossette asked

“Tall, and I didn’t hit him. Some Yuke did.” Trigger explained.

And why did you have a Yuke do your dirty work?” Cossette asked pointedly, putting her hands on her hips.

“It was very simple, that tall one said some things that I disagreed with, we got in a shouting match and the Yuke broke it up…. Then Andre hit me but that was unrelated. Also, on a side note, I don’t think he’s our traitor.” Trigger said rapidly.

“Ok… A lot of information to unpack there… Just explain it to me later.”

“Oh, you’re no fun.” Trigger teased.

“Just be sure to find me after this is all over. I don’t want to go to my room alone tonight.” Cossette asked.

“Of course.”

***
The ball had wrapped up just past midnight. To Trigger and many of the guest’s surprise, there was no parting words from Cossette, just a formal announcement from the master of ceremonies wishing them a safe trip to their homes.

Finding himself in the nearly empty ballroom, save for the handful of palace staff cleaning up, Trigger started singing a song to himself as he paced around the room.

oh, oh oh, For the longest time.” He muttered between humming the verse and the bridge of a tune his parents had played often in his childhood.

He reflected on the rest of the night. It had mostly gone without incident, Trigger watched as Cossette had danced with multiple diplomats and senior Erusean Officers, and had a smug satisfaction watching Schmidt stay in close step behind his father, away from most of the attention. Aside from speaking briefly with Colonel Woods and Colonel Padbury from the local Osean Army garrisons, Trigger spent most of the event watching from the sidelines, choosing to drink his cola and listen to the big band in peace; leaving the officers, politicians and diplomats and their spouses to dance the night away.

Hearing the clack of high heels on the floor behind him, Trigger stopped his song and turned around to see a very tired looking Cossette. “Was the band not good enough for you?” She asked smirking.

Trigger chuckled at the jab “I dunno, trombone four was a bit pitchy and well, that Drummer couldn’t keep time to save his life. Maybe the Radicals didn’t want these guys for a reason?” he joked, garnering a tired laugh from Cossette.

“Are you ready to be escorted back Your Highness?” Trigger asked, holding out his arm.

“Gladly Major, once I get out of these god-awful heels.” She said, moments later she returned slightly shorter.

“Better?” Trigger asked. “Better” Cossette shot in response, taking his arm. As the two walked out of the ballroom.

Walking down a darkened hallway, Cossette spoke up, resting her arm on Triggers shoulder as they walked. “While I’m glad to hear you don’t think It’s Colonel Andre, May I ask why?” She asked

Trigger shook his head. “I can’t put my finger on it. Just in talking with him tonight, the man just has nothing to gain from it. He lost his daughter, but I get the feeling he has nothing left but Erusea.” Trigger explained.

“I see. Then any idea who could have been responsible?” Cossette asked

“No, and that’s the thing that bothers me. Everyone else was clean… Could just be a simple case of the Radicals getting lucky.”

Cossette stopped “Ok, and how often do you think that could happen?”

Trigger shrugged “Can’t say, its really the only option left unless the flight commander was suicidal- which I doubt.”

Cossette furrowed her brow “Well that’s troubling.” She muttered.

“Hey, liven up! the wars over, you won. I think its safe to take a sigh of relief” Trigger said smiling, placing a reassuring hand on her shoulder.

Cossette gave a weak smiled “You’re right. I need to be more focused on the reconstruction now that this terrible event is over.”

The two continued on their walk, holding onto each other until they reached Cossette’s room. She gingerly opened the door “So, about that dance?” Cossette asked

“Really? This late?”

“Of course, I want to at least be able I technically danced with my boyfriend at the ball, even if its technically after the fact.”

“Well, I would be more than happy to oblige.” Trigger said, following Cossette into her bedroom.

“Hmm, but what do we do about music?” She asked

“Don’t worry, I think I have something for that.” Trigger said, pulling out his phone. Tapping on the music player, the small tinny sound of a floor tom drum, followed by a piano.

Trigger, setting the phone down held out his arm for Cossette to join him.

The two held each other close, lazily dancing in the dark room, Trigger could smell the sweet aroma of the perfume Cossette was wearing. He felt her warmth in his arms as he Silently danced with her.

Fill my heart with song and let me sing forever more” the long-dead singer sang.

Cossette spun around in the crescendo Allowing her dress to fly up freely.

Reaching the end of the song, Trigger picked up the tune, singing along with the music

In other words, In other words, I. Love. You.” Trigger sang with the end of the song.

Cossette leaned in for a kiss. Trigger’s heart skipping a beat like it always had done since they had been together.

“Well that was great, Another song?” Cossette asked, taking a chance to collect her breathe.

“Yeah, about that.” Trigger began.

***
Trigger walked into the Jewelry store. It was an immaculately clean place, with beige walls and wooden display cases along the main floor.

“Is there something I can help you with sir? We’re about to close.” The jeweler asked. He was an older man, in a blazer and had thick glasses and thinning hair.

“Yeah, I am looking for a ring.” Trigger replied sheepishly.

The jeweler held out his arms over the display case in front of him. “Well friend, you came to the right place. What kind of ring are you looking for?”

Trigger walked up to the counter and leaned in close, looking for any prying ears. Seeing the only people in the store was Himself and the proprietor he spoke.

“An engagement ring if you can help me with that.” Trigger replied.

“Well, who’s the lucky lady?” The older man asked. “You wouldn’t believe me if I told you” Trigger replied smiling. “Try me.”

“Well it’s a Princess.”

The man laughed “Ha! Your right, I don’t believe you! Well, who ever she is, she certainly deserves something nice. Give me a second and I might just have something that will fit your budget and still look good on her hand.” The jeweler said walking towards the backroom.

“Wait? How do you know what my budget is?” Trigger asked confused.

“Lemme guess, You’re a relatively new officer, right? Probably just finished your first actual war?” the man asked folding his arms

“Ok, Im impressed, that’s correct by all accounts” Trigger said amused

“Well comes with the territory, I was in the ISAF Army back when we took the Whiskey Corridor. Saw plenty of your type around. So, trust me, I have exactly what you need.” The man winked, disappearing in a back room.

***

Trigger got down on one knee before Cossette and reached into his breast pocket on his coat.

“Cossette, the past six months with you have been the greatest of my life. And, well I’d love if we could continue like this for the rest of our lives together.” Trigger began.

Cossette gasped and put her hands over her mouth. Trigger could see tears welling up in her eyes.

“I was thinking since my contract to Osea is almost up here pretty soon, and the fact that your no longer at war, if we could you know, make it official.” Trigger continued, pulling out the small ring.

It was a small and conservative gold band, with a single diamond in the center.

“What I guess I’m trying to say is. Will you, Rosa Cossette D’Elise, Marry me?”

Chapter 21

 TWENTY-ONE

This is Gargoyle One, leaving operation airspace with Golem Two” the veteran Tomcat pilot reported.

Trigger gave a weak smile at the report before turning his attention back to his situational awareness display, there was still dozens of Erusean drones, and one Arsenal Bird in the airspace over the Chopinburg rainforest that he and Clown would have to handle as members of the rear guard, buying Gargoyle and Golem Squadrons time to escape.

Damn Squids, they get to run with their tail between their legs, and we have to do the hard work Trigger admonished to himself.

The AWACS Sky Keeper rapidly chimed in “Retreating aircraft, prepare for combat, it’s a Bogey. Gargoyle One, Golem two, engage now! Attack!” he ordered.

So much for proper radio calls Trigger thought to himself.

Trigger slewed his radar onto one drone, he locked onto it and fired one of his remaining AIM-120 missiles. “Fox Three” he said quickly over the radio. The jet shuddered as the missile left the pylon.

One jet, it’s an SU-30” Gargoyle one reported. Flankers, Erusea’s sending in the big boys now, I should probably save my last ARMAAM for him then Trigger made a mental note, and clicked over to the stores page on the multi-function display of the F-16. A Drone streaked past his canopy, Gotcha.

“Gargoyle one – Caution Missile!” Trigger could hear a voice shout. The voice was female, but not of any Hornet pilots he knew.

That’s not right.

Trigger returned his attention to the Drone, it was right in front of him, a perfect shot. He flipped the switch to outboard and lined the pipper on the tail of the drone. Squeezing the trigger, he could hear a belch and watched as the sleek lines of the drone erupted into a fireball.

He turned his attention back to Golem and Gargoyle.

Sky Keeper, Gargoyle One lost.” The Female hornet pilot reported.

That’s not Brownie. The thought crystalized within Triggers mind.

What the Hell?!” Trigger wasn’t sure if he or the AWACS said it first. He got onto the radio “Cossette is that you?” Trigger shouted, confused, and embarrassed.

None of this makes any sense.

Golem Two, status report!”  Sky Keeper demanded.

There was the sound of grunted and straining. In response. Trigger switched back to his situational awareness display and looked frantically for the now alone F/A-18. He banked his Viper in a hard turn and firewalled the throttle, he felt a slight jolt as it went into afterburner. The speed tapes on his HUD screamed by.

Just talk to me!” Sky Keeper said forcefully.

I’m against, an SU-30!” Golem Two replied.

“Cosette, I’m inbound!” Trigger shouted.

Negative Mage Two, you need to support the other members of Golem and Gargoyle, Cossette can handle this herself.” Sky Keeper admonished

Judy, Judy!” Trigger hissed. He saw an 18 pop up on his RWR receiver, almost obscured by the 30 of the hostile Flanker. Trigger engaged his Air-to-air radar and slewed around.

I can’t shake it off, its matching me move for move!” Cossette replied.

Golem Two, stop dogfighting and run!” Knocker ordered.

Trigger furrowed his brow, the two radar targets were almost overlapping, he didn’t want to risk locking onto the wrong jet.

“Cossette, listen! I need you to get some separation on this guy, I can’t lock him up until you do.” Trigger replied. He watched the distance to target tick down.

The longer it takes, the worse our odds of getting out of here are. Machines don’t get tired.” Knocker said. “No Shit” replied Clown, the annoyance rising in his voice.

I’m dead meat!” Cossette cried. Not good. Trigger thought.

“Keep your head in the game dammit! Jink and get away from that bastard!” Trigger shouted.

I don’t get it, why isn’t it opening fire?” Cossette said hesitantly. Trigger could recognize what was happening. Whoever she was up against had successfully gotten inside her head. She no longer was able to think about the fight before her.

Focus Cossette!” Trigger shouted in vain. Fuck it. He selected a target and fired off his last AIM-120. He watched as the missile lost radar lock and sailed harmlessly though a cloud layer and into the jungle below.

I’m scared!” Cossette cried. Trigger’s F-16 punched through a Cloud and was visual to the situation. Cossette’s Hornet rolled and weaved sloppily, the Flanker sitting right on her tail.

Trigger switched over to his remaining AIM-9 Sidewinder, the low growl filled his helmet.

I’m scared!” Cossette cried again.

This is not good.” Clown noted. “Cossette, break off!” Knocker ordered.

Mage, help us!” Shouted one of the remaining Gargoyle pilots.

We need to get those UAV’s off our friends!” Clown barked.

Trigger maneuvered his F-16, he was still out of the Sidewinder’s engagement range.

Golem Two, what’s your status?” Knocker asked. Hearing nothing, he shouted again “Status report!”

I can’t do this” Cossette replied weakly.

Golem two get ahold of yourself!” Knocker yelled.

Trigger could hear a high-pitched squeal in his helmet “Mage two engaging!”

“Trigger” Cossette said slowly. Time seemed to stop.

Goodbye” she said.

Trigger watched in horror as the Hornet in front of him exploded in a ball of fragments and flames. He looked around frantically, not noticing that the Missile had lost its lock.

Come on, Parachute, where is the chute! He thought as he frantically searched the sky below. The Hornet’s burning corpse plunged into one of the snaking rivers below.

His blood was boiling now.

BASTARDS!” he screamed, spittle flying from his mouth as he maneuvered the jet to reengage the Flanker head on. Voices over the radio sounded distant, almost underwater. He put the F-16 into Dogfight mode.

He could see tracer’s from the Flankers 30mm canon streak past his cockpit. He hardly noticed the glass of his canopy shatter away.

He could hardly feel any outside sensations as the AIM-9’s targeting reticle fell on the cockpit of the Flanker.

He squeezed the trigger and fired his final missile.

***

Trigger woke up startled. Just a dream he reminded himself. He looked around and saw he was still at Farbanti Air Base. Standing up he stretched out and checked his watch. Just past 9:30. Sunrise was at 6, No wonder why I hurt like hell He thought.

He made his way back to the makeshift command post the Oseans had set up in the bases courtyard. Trigger found Major Walker, sitting on the back of a Humvee and stirring a brown liquid Trigger guessed was coffee in a Styrofoam cup. “Morning sunshine.” Walker said as Trigger walked up. “morning” Trigger replied sluggishly.

“Coffee?” Walker asked offering the cup of mystery liquid. “Is that what this is called?” Trigger shot back. “Damn air force prima donnas” Walker grumbled, taking back the cup.

“Any idea when we’re heading back?” Trigger asked, looking around at the Osean forces milling around the field. Walked shrugged “Whenever Padbury and Woods stop arguing, I guess. If you want back into town, you’re better off asking one of the Eruseans for a ride probably. I can’t spare the men or vehicles.” Walker said apologetically.

“eh, don’t worry about it. I’ll see what I can do.” Trigger replied.

Returning to the Eruseans operations building, Trigger was still having issues shaking the dream he had had. It had felt real to him. At least we only dealt with the one Trigger thought to himself.

Trigger knocked on Colonel Andre’s door. “What do you need?” The Colonel said laconically, keeping his attention on a computer monitor Infront of him.

“Preferably to see if I can get a ride back to the Palace.” Trigger said.

Andre raised an eyebrow and looked up from the screen. “I am to be reporting to Her Royal Highness in two hours. I will be leaving in fifteen minutes if you so wish.”

“That’ll be fine.” Trigger said unargumentative Weird how he’s being so talkative.

“You do not say a word the entire trip. Got it?” Andre ordered.

“Understood.”

The ride was uneventful. Trigger couldn’t help himself but think about the dream the night before. The feelings of pure hate and loss were still fresh in his mind.

Upon arrival to the Royal palace, Trigger stumbled his way to his room to quickly shower off and change.

Donning a fresh pair of ABUs and feeling slightly better, Trigger walked his way to the royal office wing of the palace. There, awaiting him, was Cossette’s head assistant, Gretchen.

“Ah, Major. Her Royal Highness was expecting you.”

“is she in a Good or bad mood?” Trigger asked.

“Inconclusive. I’m sure your report will have much to do with her mood.” Gretchen replied tersely. “If you will wait right here. She is still in talks with Colonel Andre.” Gretchen ordered, motioning to a chair in the waiting room.

Trigger once again dozed off until he heard the door to Cossette’s office open and close. He blinked a few times to see Colonel Andre glaring at him. The Colonel straightened out his coat and without saying a word, walked away.

Whatever. Trigger thought.

“Major, come in!” Cossette bellowed from her office.

Trigger quickly made his way in and shut the door behind him.

“Where were you last night?” Cossette opened with.

Without replying, Trigger ran over and embraced her. He could feel tears welling up in his eyes. He thought about the nightmare.

“Trigger!” She admonished before relenting and returning his hug.

“Is everything alright?” she asked concerned, looking into his eyes. Trigger stepped back and rubbed his eyes clear and composed himself. “Yeah, just a bad night. I’ll be fine. As for your question, I went to go see the local Osean garrison.”

“Yeah, but then I hear you ended up at the Air Base?”

“Oh yeah that. The local commanders thought it was another attack from Erusea. They wanted to secure the airbase to make sure it wasn’t.” Trigger explained.

“And why did they assume it was us?”

“Mostly because no one could get a hold of them or the Colonel.”

wait, what do you mean ‘no one could get a hold of the Colonel’. Was he not with you?” Cossette asked.

“Eventually. Was he not with you?” Trigger replied.

“He was, but well into the ‘attack’. I understand while there were casualties. Most were friendly fire.” Cossette said, putting her fist under her chin.

“That sounds about right. Andre said he was with you though; did he tell you something different?”

“No, not directly. Trigger, I don’t want to sound paranoid, but its all to convenient; the timing that is. Right as everything is collapsing, they go for one final blow against the Capitol? It just seems too convenient.”

“So, what are you thinking?”

“I want you to do me a favor Trigger. Someone set this up, and I need you to find out who.” Cossette ordered.

“That honestly seems easier said than done.”

“You’ve made acquaintances with those on the base already, plus you have an idea what to look for anyways. And on top of all that, you’re the only person I can actually trust.” Cossette replied.

Trigger walked behind her desk and embraced her in a hug. “Of course, I’ll get it done. I mean, you buttered me up with all those sweet words.”

“Well you do owe me anyways. I was alone without you here. And now I hear you decided to sleep outside at some random airport instead of with your own girlfriend?” Cossette said slyly.

“Well, I feel bad about it, you know those metal benches hurt?” Trigger said in an exaggerated stretching motion causing Cossette to giggle.

“How do you propose I go about finding these answers? You do know I am not a member of your Air Force. I can’t imagine I will have immediate access to their documents.”

“Easy. I’m the Princess and I will tell Andre to give you access. He won’t like it, but he will have to listen.” Cossette said flatly.

“Isn’t that one way to just piss him off more? I know he wasn’t in a good mood leaving.”

“He will get over himself. He’s in a mood because of our absence yesterday.”

That caught Trigger’s attention “What did he find out?”

“Oh nothing. Just that I wasn’t here when the ‘attack’ began.” Cossette replied.

“Seems to be a lot of that going around today.” Trigger mused.

***
Captain Norris read the briefing handed to him. Nodding he pinned it to the board.

“Listen up!” He bellowed to the Marines milling around in the hangar. “Our Source came through for us once again. Looks like the transaction is on! Get your asses in gear!” he yelled.

“What’s the insertion going to be?” one of the Squad leaders asked.

“Night Stalkers will be dropping in our main assault elements and Third for perimeter watch. Fourth has the Chinook ride.” Norris replied.

There was a handful of groans from the operators assigned to the Fourth element, Norris grinned at their dismay. “Get over it you cry babies. Not everything we do is out of an action movie.” He reminded them.

“I miss Saber, at least they brought pizza.” Groaned another member of the crowed.

***

It was nearing Afternoon by the time Trigger had returned to Farbanti Air Base. Despite the excitement of the previous twenty-four hours, and the Osean unit still parked in their front yard, life on base seemed to have returned to normal. As Trigger entered the Operations building, he could hear the roar of F-5 fighter jets taking off.

Now where the hell will I even begin to look? Trigger thought to himself frustrated.

“Trigger!” he heard a familiar voice call out. It was Asher. “What brings you back so soon?” Asher asked

Trigger shrugged, “Yeah, just wanting to see if there was any information on the incident last night on behalf of the Princess.”

Asher scowled. “That whole shit-show. We’re reasonably positive both Professor and Chief were actually shot down, but the bandits had fucked off before we ever responded. Everyone else was blue-on-blue fire.”

“So, the Colonel was right in his assessment?” Trigger asked.

“Spot-fucking-on. Would ‘a been nice if he had fucking been here from the beginning to stop that shit.” Asher said gritting his teeth.

“You friends with either of them?” Trigger asked. “Yeah, I knew Professor since he was also a flight lead. Good pilot.” Asher replied.

“You ever lose anyone you knew?” Asher asked.

“Plenty. Unfortunately.” Trigger replied solemnly. Brownie, Champ, Clown, Full Band, High Roller, Twister, Wiseman.

“So, anything else you can tell me?” Trigger asked, changing the subject.

Asher looked around before responding “Nothing I can say out in the open. Follow me.” He said, leading Trigger to an empty Squadron briefing room.

“why the secrecy?” Trigger asked.

“Rumor is someone set them up. There were no indications that it was just a pop-up assault, those bandits knew when and where those guys would be.” Asher said

“Seems like a pretty big assumption for an incident not even a day old.” Trigger said folding his arms.

“Intelligence Services intercepted a transmission a few hours before direct to Lambert facility, had their flight plan and everything.” Asher replied.

“Who would have access to those plans anyways?” Trigger asked.

“Functionally? Just Professor and Pepe.” Asher replied.

“Yeah but don’t you have a sortie schedule? Anyone could have figured it out.”

“Not exactly. Unlike a regular patrol, Pepe wanted us to mix it up. The odds of someone just looking at it and getting those details are slim to none.” Asher quickly replied.

“And Professor probably didn’t leak his own plans.” Trigger said slowly before shaking his head. “What would Andre have for motivation?”

Asher shrugged. “Supposedly he was one of those officers sympathetic to the Free Erusean movement during the last war. Makes sense he would want to see the Federation rise again.”

“Seems like a bit of a stretch considering his recent history though.” Trigger replied skeptically.

“Occom’s Razor. The simplest solution is almost always the best” Asher stated.

“Well we need more than a gut feeling.” Trigger replied.

“Fine. Professor was a friend, and I’ll be dammed if I let the Colonel get away with his death.” Asher said determined.

***
Cossette took her seat in the darkened room. She was in the Erusean High Command’s war room, Located two stories underground below the High Command complex in Farbanti.

The entire complex was a brick-for-brick recreation of the original facility, dating back to the early 1940’s, It was one of the many aspects of Farbanti that had been erased with the Ulysses disaster.

Along the wall opposite to her, was positioned three giant monitors, all with different information. On the furthest to her left she recognized the map of the Lambert region of Erusea, a mountainous region and the last refuge of the Radical forces, occupying the command-and-control bunkers built within the granite mountain range. One the furthest right was a constant stream of data scrolling past, it seemed to be of great interest to the Generals she had gathered but it was mostly foreign to Cossette. Occupying the middle screen was an overhead view of the snowcapped mountain range, Cossette thought she was staring at a picture until she noticed the faint explosions from artillery peppering the sreen.

An Erusean Army colonel took his position behind a podium in front of the monitors.

“Your Highness, Ladies and Gentlemen. It is with great pleasure that I report that Operation Ragnarök is set to commence. We will be seeing the end of the Radicals today.” The colonel started.

“Care to explain the Operation?” Cossette asked.

The colonel laughed nervously and continued “Ragnarök will be a joint Erusean and Osean operation. We have outfitted our remaining Tu-95 bombers with left over Helios warheads, and the Oseans will be deploying their B-52’s with GBU-57 ‘bunker busters’ precision bombs. The plan, in short, will be to drop the Lambert facility on the remaining Radicals heads.”

Cossette pursed her lips at the thought. “Have we given them any options to surrender?”

This time, a much older general spoke up. “Of course your highness but, they have shown no indication of stopping. Believe us when I say that this is our last resort.”

Cossette nodded. “What is this footage we’re seeing now from?” She asked, motioning towards the center screen.

“The FCU graciously is lending us a data feed from a U-2 spy plane they deployed as an overwatch. This is just one of the few sensors it has onboard.” He reported.

Another officer stood up and shouted, “Five minutes!”

***
Adams watched as a black suburban drove leisurely towards the warehouse. It hadn’t been more than half an hour and already he had counted five separate vehicles had made their way to the warehouse.

Berserker Actual, Rider One-Four. Looks like we have another party guest. How copy?” He whispered into his throat microphone.

Berserker copies all. We have Vipers overhead and got good handshake. Plenty of tangos on the inside too. Stay out of sight until we arrive.” Captain Norris ordered.

Adams could see the occupants of the vehicle disembark as it parked. One man in the back, their leader he presumed, was dressed in a flashy teal suit with a bright pink dress shirt, He almost looked like an albino to Adams with a nearly translucent skin and pale blond hair. His entire look was in sharp contrast to the rest of the men who were either dressed in combat gear or were in fine suits.

A lot of guys just for a simple arms deal.” Zhao mused over the radio. Hiding with a small assault team across the street from the warehouse.

Our Source seems to think that something might have soured with the buyer. They are probably just trying to protect their investment.” Fick replied.

Adams watched the warehouse for what felt to him like an eternity. “All Servants be advised, large Semi-truck inbound. Must be the buyer.” One of the Berserker command post marines reported.

Adams watched the semi-truck and trailer park Infront of the warehouse, He watched one of the men run out of the truck cab and open the door to the trailer, he watched as half a dozen men hopped out and took up a defensive position around the trailer. To his surprise, instead of the rag-tag rebel or terrorist group he was expecting, they were well groomed and uniformed professional soldiers.

Well this is strange.” Zhao whispered.

Berserker is three minutes out” Norris reported.

Adams racked a round into the barrel of his M200 and clicked off the safety. Then he settled in to wait.

Over the ambient noise of the harbor, he could start to pick up the distinctive sound of rotor blades beating against the air.

Wish we could have cleared the civilians out of here he thought to himself.

All Servants, Berserker is one minute out. Grail is filled” Norris reported.

The sound of gunfire filled the air.

***
Trigger studied the documents before him on the desk. Him and Asher had been spending the previous hours poring through the information they had on the shot down aircrafts mission, along with personnel records of everyone involved.

He rubbed his temples, “The only thing I am not getting is the why of it all.” He said defeated.

Asher kicked his feet up on the desk and took a sip of coffee, reading through the Air Traffic Controllers personnel record “For which one?”

“Andres. The Controller checks out, As do both of the pilots. But Andre’s record is also perfect in this regard.” Trigger said confused.

“I wonder if that’s just his official record we’re seeing then.” Asher proposed.

“What the hell do you mean?”

“Well you see, after the last War, plenty of officers went and joined the ‘Free Erusea’ movement, however not all of them defected, some provided material aid, others intel, and some, helped existing defectors get back into the fold.”

“Nice theory but how does Andre come into all of this?” Trigger asked.

Asher took his feet off the desk and leaned forward. “Look at all the black ink before 2009? How much do you want to bet Pepe was apart of the Free Erusea movement?”

“And your saying he might have leaked this to the Radicals now?”

“I mean, Pepe was one of the first officers trained after the original Royal Family was ousted. Makes sense to me.”

“I don’t know. I think we’d need more evidence if you wanted to convince anyone.” Trigger said defeated.

“Well, just look at his daughter then.” Asher said pointed

“What daughter?” Trigger asked.

“Do you mean you never saw the pictures in his office?” Asher asked

“No? His office was empty every time I’ve been there.”

Asher shook his head.

“You see Trigger. Colonel Andre has been somewhat of a legend around here, but for more than his flying abilities. Like I said, he was one of the first officers trained out of the Academy when the Federation took over, but after that he was commissioned in the Air Force as a Tomcat pilot with the 41st Fighter Squadron. He made a name for himself during the coup d’état, becoming an ace a few times over.” Asher explained.

“Ok, go on? Im still not seeing motive to kill F-5’s here.”

“Well, in his private life, he also had a family. I guess he got married right after commissioning, and in 1996 they had their only daughter Sophie. For those few years I guess It was idyllic until 1999 with Ulysses. He was living in Farbanti when it all went down. He was able to save his daughter, but his wife was one of the thousands killed in the old town. He was probably one of the first men to volunteer in the missions against the FCU after that. I think he blamed them for his wife’s death.”

Trigger nodded.

“After that,” Asher shrugged before continuing “His daughter was enrolled in a Military school for most of the Continental War, and I guess he didn’t come back into her life until the Royal family returned to power. From there he traded the life of a fighter jock to that of a single father. It was no real surprise she was accepted into the military academy, and of course ENN made a big deal out of her joining the 41st like her old man.”

“Ok? Where is this going?”

“Then comes this war. Sophie and her Squadron were assigned as a forward assault element, supported by the Arsenal Birds we seized. Last July, her unit was stationed in Roca Roja, just behind the main front line and guarding a munitions depot or some shit. Osea came out of nowhere and obliterated the base, Killed Sophie and her squadron too. I guess Pepe was gutted after hearing those words.”

Trigger furrowed his brow. Was that the one where High Roller got shot down? He struggled to remember. Trigger nodded for Asher to conclude.

“So, since Pepe doesn’t know, or can’t kill the sum bitch that killed his daughter. Who are you thinking he is pinning the blame on for killing the last of his family?”

Trigger felt his face drop as he came to the same conclusion. “Do you honestly think he’d blame the Princess?”

Asher shrugged “Maybe. I guess his daughter was a hard-liner for the Royal families push for war. Princess Rosa inflamed many people of our generation towards the cause. And Andre has the precedent. ‘Burn Osea to the Ground’ was their battle cry, I think he might have taken at least the sentiment to heart when it comes to the Princess.”

 Trigger nodded.

Shots fired! Shots Fired!” Zhao hissed into the radio. Adams watched the gunfight play out below as the Soldiers and sicario gunned each other down in a confusing cacophony of gunfire and bloodshed.

One of the MH-6 Helicopters flew past Adams vantage point, He could see flashes of small arms fire from the helicopters as the operators dispatched the gunmen outside the building.

Adams, taking the cue, lined up a shot. There was an unidentified soldier taking cover behind one of the vehicles, fumbling with his HK-33 assault rifle that appeared to have jammed.

Adams lined the crosshairs just above the soldiers neck, taking into account the bullet drop to place the shot into the mans chest.

He let out a breath and squeezed the trigger.

CRACK

Adams waited for half a second to see the man crumple in place, then he repositioned the rifle to another target.

Cossette watched the icons crawl across the screen. Fighting war like this felt too sterile, being disconnected from the battle unfolding before her from the remote vantage point.

“We had music last time. Can’t we get something to play now? I think Flight of the Valkyries by Wagner would be a good fit.” Complained one of the generals.

Cossette glared at him “I don’t see how you’d want to celebrate this occasion. We’re sentencing our own countrymen to die today.” She scolded.

“Well your highness, if your family had shown more leadership during our war with the Oseans, maybe we would be in this mess or would have to resort to this” the general retorted.

“General Marquis, will you kindly shut the fuck up?” Colonel Andre growled from behind Cossette, startling her.

When the hell did he get here? She thought to herself.

“Colonel, I’d remind you to take heed of your tone.” Marquis hissed.

Or what? I frankly agree with the Colonel” Cossette said defiantly.

She could see General Marquis starting to form a response, but then leaned back and conceded the point.

Wise choice, asshole. She thought, smirking to herself.

“Thirty seconds to weapons deployment” shouted an officer from the rear of the room. A Timer appeared above the live footage of the battlefield.

Cossette watched the center monitor as the first of the Osean bombers entered the picture, their engines leaving distinct contrails in their wake as they approached their targets.

“Someone put on the audio” barked another officer.

Soon a hissing noise came over the speakers in the room, dominating everything

This is Buccaneer one-one. Ordinance has good handshake with forward observers” one of the bomber pilots reported.

Buccaneer one-three, mudspike” Another pilot calmly reported

“Buccaneer two-four Bombs away” a bombardier reported over the radio. Cossette watched the first explosion rock the mountain as the timer hit 0:00. Soon the room was dominated by radio traffic as similar reports were made, the screen was filled with billowing black smoke belching from the few craters in the mountain side.

Buccaneer, RTB” The first pilot reported a minute after the bombing began.

“Bears are one minute behind” An officer reported to the room.

Andre crouched down and whispered to Cossette “Its almost time for the finale your highness. I don’t think anyone here would blame you for looking away at this point.” He said reassuringly.

She shook her head. “No, I need to see this through. I owe them that much.” She said, steeling herself.

Cossette watched as glistening smaller dots arced their way into view. The polished metal of the Erusean Air Force’s Tu-95 ‘Bear’ bombers gliding across the snowy hellscape below.

A new voice came over the radio. “Attention all bombers. The Osean’s Fat Fuckers kicked in the bastards door and now its up to us to finish the job. Prepare your ordinance and let us finish what they started! To Erusea!” The pilot bellowed to the cheers of his fellow squadron-mates.

Sakura two, Weapon is armed. Bombs away!” Shouted another pilot.

The room fell silent in anticipation. The image from the U-2 pixelated briefly as a bright blue flash filled the screen, before it had a chance to dissipate, more bright flashes joined it.

Gradually, the image on the screen faded and cleared, to reveal the damage.

The smoke had been blown away, as was the snow, and what appeared to be several layers of rock. The mountain now looked sunken and hollow to Cossette; On the far-right screen she could see geological stations reporting the shockwaves emanating throughout the mountain as the complex crumbled inside.

After a pregnant pause, the sound to the radio returned

Sakura Squadron, RTB”

“Now what do we do?” asked another General.

“We have to wait. The Blackcat U-2 will stay on station a while longer to assess the situation. The Radical threat should be buried underneath all that granite and explosives.” Colonel Andre replied pragmatically.

Cossette let out a long sigh of relief and slunk back into her chair. Is it really over that easily? She thought. It bothered her how little she felt on the situation.

“Well Your Highness, I should congratulate you on your success in defeating the Radical threat.” General Marquis said hollowly straightening the papers before him. Instead of a joyous mood, the room remained somber, Cossette was not sure if it was for her sake or if the rest of her officers shared the same sentiments.

Norris bounced around on the bench on the MH-6 Helicopter. He was annoyed with the way the entire mission was planning out, mostly due to the fighting having been started without his men engaging the enemy first. Nothing survives first contact he thought as he lined up his red dot sight on a target, from the quick glance he guessed it was one of the cartel’s sicarios that was running on the roof of the target warehouse. With a quick burst of his HK-416 the gangster was dropped.

Norris looked around to the outside of the building and saw largely no movement. He keyed his throat mic

“Berserker One to Rider, Is the area clear for insertion?”

Rider to Berserker, all external hostiles taken care of. Feel free” Adams replied.

“Assassin, Berserker, get ready to kill the lights in the building. Element two, take up defensive positions at the front, Element one will breach the building from the side.” Norris ordered, motioning for the Littlebird pilot to set the helicopter down in the landing zone.

As he unclipped from the helicopter, he saw the second element taking up positions around the Semi-truck’s trailer. Waiting for the MH-6 to lift off again, he motioned for his squad to stack up on a side door to the warehouse.

“Berserker to Assassin, where we coming with those lights?” Norris whispered.

Standby. Ok ready to go on your call Berserker” Zhao replied.

Norris waited for his squad to get into position, rigging the door with an explosive to blow the lock off and allow them inside.

“Ok, we’re doing this like standard. Anyone inside is a bad guy and you treat them as such. Got it?” Norris said firmly. He knew that they were well aware of the situation but repeating it out loud made it crystal clear the situation.

“On My Count. Three, Two One, Breach!” Norris barked into the Radio. A second after the flimsy metal door was blown from its hinges, a flash bang grenade tossed by the second element detonated inside the warehouse, the multiple cargo containers providing ample surfaces for the deafening noise and blinding light to permeate the room.  Norris flipped down a night vision monocle and lead the way into the warehouse. Moving quickly to evade the fatal funnel of the doorway, the Marines fanned out through the narrow corridors of the warehouse. Norris could hear gunfire as his squad eliminated those they found.

Norris kept his rifle at the ready as he made his way towards the center of the structure, his world bathed in a green light from the night vision, nearing a T in the path he paused, he slowly peeked his head around the corner to see an armored cartel member rubbing his eyes with his hand, likely blinded in the initial assault.

Norris studied the man for a split second, He was armored, but his weapon was hung by the sling on his shoulder, and at the angle he was leaning on the wall Norris had a perfect shot to his chest to bypass the plates he was wearing. Fucking amateur Norris thought to himself as he pulled the trigger, sending a three round 5.56 burst into the mans abdomen. Like with the others, he fell to the floor dead instantly.

“Berserker One, Tango down, Proceeding to main target.” Norris whispered as he continued towards the weapon.

All Berserker servants be advised; I am still seeing one more tango around the weapon. Looks like he may be gunning to arm it.” One of Berserkers command post Marines reported over the net.

Norris reached the target area the same time as other members of his team, the final target was waiving a flashlight around in vain and yelling. Norris paused for a moment and noted the man was wielding a large handgun and was in a cheap suit. Lowering his weapon, he pulled a knife from his vest and threw it to a far-off corner of the room.

As he had expected, the cheap suit fired wildly at the direction of the noise, the quick rapport of gunfire was cut off by a dull crack crack crack of suppressed rifles cut the man down.

“Tango down” was whispered across the net.

There was a pause as the Marines approached and secured the suspect crate. As the Marines worked, they received the all clear signal, and slowly the lights returned to the warehouse.

With the benefit of light, Norris could see the blood bath, a handful of dead soldiers, along with what appeared to have been a few dead suited cartel members along with their leader. Norris crouched down and peeled the gun from the dead leaders hand, It was a massive and ugly weapon, poorly painted in a golden color, Norris read DESERT EAGLE PISTOL – MAGNUM RESEARCH was engraved along the slide.

“Gangsters do have the flair for the dramatic.” Mused a voice behind Norris, he looked back to see Berserker Teams medic, Hernandez, watching over him.

“Yeah something like that. 44 Mag from the looks of it.” Norris replied, tossing the pistol aside.

Hernandez shrugged “It looks cool but that’s about it for its tactical capabilities. Im fine with my current kit.” He replied tapping a hand on the MP7 he had slung to his chest.

“Was there something you needed?” Norris asked, standing up and wiping his hands on his pants.

“yeah, Police are showing up and Third Element needed someone to talk to the bureaucrat they brought with them.”

Joy, Well just for that Doc, your coming with me.” Norris replied.

“Berserker Four-One, Berserker One, whats the ETA on the EOD teams?” Norris asked, walking towards the exit of the warehouse, passing even more dead cartel members.

Five minutes boss” Replied the marine.

Norris sighed.

“Super Six-One, Berserker, two for dust off to Berserker Three’s location” Norris called raggedly into his radio.

Super Six-One” replied the Littlebird pilot.

“Whats up Boss?” Hernandez asked

“I just hate dealing with the public. What do you want me to say?” he replied, squinting as he exited the building and into the daylight. He could hear in the far distance over the sound of the helicopters and other noises of the Harbor, a wailing of police sirens.

After a brief ride on the Littlebird to the entrance of the Harbor, Captain Norris could see what his men were dealing with. Flying over, he saw multiple SWAT APC’s and police cruisers gathered, One APC was billowing smoke and had flipped to its side, blocking the narrow entrance to the other vehicles.

The Police had taken defensive positions and were barking orders at the Marines, who were dug in.

“Set us down in the middle of that!” Norris yelled to the pilot, The pilot grinned and nodded, and in a dramatic fashion, blasting the members of Selatapura’s finest in rotor wash, he set the small helicopter down long enough for the two marines to disembark, before lifting off again.

Norris could hear a police officer barking orders to him over a bullhorn, which he held up a middle finger and walked towards his team leader.

“Gunny mind telling me what the fuck you did?” Norris opened with

The Gunnery Sergeant shrugged “They wanted to come in, we told them no. They pressed the issue. If its any consolation, we didn’t kill any of them, it was just enough to knock the MRAP on its side.” He said pragmatically.

Norris rubbed his face. “Fine… I guess I’ll go sort this out. Fucking jackass” Norris said, turning an about face and approaching the police line.

“Hey! Who’s in charge here!” Norris bellowed

“TURN AROUND AND PUT YOUR HANDS UP!” Ordered a police officer.

“That’s not what I asked. Whose. In. Charge?” Norris repeated forcefully.

Hey boss, I’m good but not ‘filled with bullet holes’ good.” Hernandez’ voice whispered in his earpiece.

“Just keep it cool. Don’t fire unless fired upon and all that shit.” Norris said underneath his breath coolly.

“That’s me! I’m In Charge” came a hurried voice, running forward out of the police line. The man was thin, wearing an I’ll fitting suit and his hair was an artificially dyed black.

He stormed his way forward towards Norris, stopping within a step and putting his hands on his hips. “Austin Troy, I am a City Council Member here, I demand to know what your doing in the Harbor! We called the Air Base and they said nothing of this!” He yelled, motioning to the operation behind Norris.

“Well sir, Lovely to know you have a job in this economy but, I don’t actually give a shit who you are or what you want. Take your cops and go home before you get hurt.” Norris replied smirking.

Troy’s face curled into a snarl and got red “I WILL NOT BE DISRESPECTED LIKE THIS!” He snarled, spittle flying onto Norris’ uniform.

Norris laughed briefly, before he reached behind Troy, grabbing the councilman’s shoulders and forcing his head into the crook of his arm. “Listen here fucker, do you see the plane up there?” He asked, pointing towards the sky. The Councilman’s previous brave demeanor had switched to that of terror

“No, No!” He stammered, vainly struggling against the Marines hold on his neck.

“Well, the Plane see’s you, and it would take more than a few seconds to turn you and your boys into mincemeat” Norris threatened. “You wouldn’t, you wouldn’t dare!” Troy stammered

“Try me.” Norris shot back before releasing the Councilman to fall to the ground.

Who are you people?” Troy coughed, rubbing his throat. “Just a bad dream, now forget we ever had this talk and go home while you still can.” Norris replied with a wicked grin.

Satisfied he made his case, he walked back towards the men of Third element.

“Nice talk boss?” Hernandez asked

“Something like that. We came to an understanding at least.” Norris replied.

Berserker Four to Berserker One, you may want to see this” Came a call on the radio.

***
Trigger and Asher made their way quickly towards the command center of the base.

“Are you sure this is a bright idea?” Asher asked

“Well unless you have anything better. We have to find out what he was doing yesterday evening.” Trigger replied.

“And what if he doesn’t tell us? You just going to hold the acting commander of the air wing hostage with that piece in your pocket?” Asher asked incredulously

“Well, We will have to burn that bridge when we come to it.” Trigger replied, reaching the door. He could hear a commotion from the other end. Weird he thought.

Swinging the door open, he could see an air of celebration.

Asher quickly grabbed the closest Erusean he could “Que ce passe-t-il?” He asked

The Erusean grabbed the pilot by his shoulders and yelled “Nous avons gagné! Nous avons gagné!”

“Won quoi?” Asher asked “La guerre, nous avons gagné la putain de guerre! Les radicaux viennent de se rendre!” The Erusean replied excitedly

“Whats going on?” Trigger shouted; Asher was grinning ear to ear “The Radicals just surrendered. The war’s over finally!”

“That’s great, but we still need to go find Andre to see what he was doing!” Trigger shouted

“Who gives a shit! Even if he was a Radical, he lost! We need to celebrate! Your coming with me Trigger!” Asher replied

“But we have a job to do!” Trigger protested

“And you’ll be able to do it tomorrow! Come on, one beer!” Asher pleaded

Trigger relented “Fine. One beer.”

Trigger was in front of the jewelry stores entrance. After Asher had dragged him to the Officers club, he had only barely escaped unnoticed by the Erusean pilots. He wasn’t sure who said it, but quickly the word had spread around the bar about Trigger’s status as the famed Three Strikes who had been a terror to them months earlier. Instead of animosity, all the Erusean pilots seemed excited to talk to Trigger, He had lost count of how many group photos he was asked to take part in or how many times he was asked if he had actually participated in certain battles over the previous year. It was getting late in the evening when Trigger was finally able to pay his tab for a half drunken draught ale that Asher had forced on him and got a cab back into Farbanti. The shopping district was starting to close by the time he arrived, and from his observation, he was one of the last customers for this particular shop. Taking a deep breath, he walked in.

***

“What are we looking at.” Norris asked.

“Well, its something I noticed when we were deactivating that Nimbus warhead over there.” The Basilisk EOD explained, pointing his thumb over his back towards a broken open crate. “We were able to confirm the teal suited guy as a Machado Cartel arms dealer, Casper ‘Koko’ Orlov. Yuktobanian citizen, been working in Sapin since the end of the Belkan War helping the Machado’s run guns, planes and shit. We knew he was in Usea so, this finally crossed him off the list.”

“Ok, but that cant be it.” Norris said annoyed

“Its not. This guy here we found dead when we arrived. He’s the problem.” The EOD said, tapping a bald-headed soldier in the head with his boot. Norris could see he was dressed in military attire, but any unit affiliation or country patches had been torn off.

“Aside from the missing bits of his chest cavity, what’s the problem?”

“I recognize him. Lieutenant Colonel Jean Durand. 145th Mechanized Infantry Division, Formerly Erusean Army. He was one of the POW’s we captured in Cape Rainy. He was last seen with the Conservative Forces near the border of Bulgurdarest.” The EOD explained.

“And I’m willing to bet then, those other men he’s with are in the same boat?”

“We took pictures and will have to confirm OIA, but that’s looking to be right.” The EOD said grimly.

“Shit.”

Chapter 20

 TWENTY

Trigger and Cossette had elected to take a scenic route back to the car from the restaurant, walking through the Reconstruction Park just north of the city. Evening had quickly set in causing the massive white marble obelisk in the heart of the park to dominate the skyline with the aid of the ground lights.

“I take this is a first for you as well?” Cossette asked Trigger, swinging his arm as she walked hand in hand with him.

“What do you mean? We went on dates like this all the time back in Selatapura?” He asked.

“I meant ‘first time seeing the park’.” She giggled.

“Yeah, Only in the pictures.” He lied Though the few from a few thousand feet wasn’t much to speak of either.

“Well, this is the first time I actually have been to the park myself.” Cossette admitted.

“That’s weird, I would have figured your family would have taken you here at least once since you live so close.” Trigger said.

Cossette shrugged “Never really made time for it. It was completed under my uncle’s reign, and that’s only because my aunt spearheaded in getting it finished. The Park was to stand as a estimate to Farbanti being able to endure any challenge it faced. From the meteor to two wars, this park stands as a reminder on how Farbanti endures.” She explained proudly.

“So, your direct family had nothing to do with it?”

“Nope, it was originally planned just before the first continental war as a memorial to those lost in the old downtown. Some token construction was started before ISAF made a pushback and defeated the Federalists. It wasn’t until my father’s cousin, the first King of Farbanti, redoubled the efforts for it to be constructed, then after his death, my aunt saw it through to its completion. Sadly, she and my uncle died shortly after its opening, so she never got to see it live up to its full potential.” Cossette said, her voice trailing off.

Trigger studied the park grounds. He was surprised how many people were milling around the large lawn area, picnicking, and largely enjoying the first days of summer. An opposite of the similar parks Osea had constructed.

“For a memorial park, it sure is busy.” Trigger noted.

“It’s not meant to be a place for reflection, there’s other parks for that. Instead the Queen wished for it to be a place for the people of Farbanti to celebrate the history of the city and people of Erusea. With all that being said I am glad your Military gave it back as quickly as they did.” Cossette said.

For the first few weeks in Farbanti, the Reconstruction Park had been home to a field hospital treating wounded from both sides of the battle. It wasn’t until communication with Osea had been reestablished that all military operations in predominantly civilian zones had been ended.

The couple walked further along the path around the perimeter of the park when they passed an old man pushing a cart selling stuffed animal toys. At Cossette’s insistence they stopped.

To Trigger they looked rather mundane, but he also had never been one to enjoy that kind of stuff anyways. She pointed to one of the toys on the cart. It was a red fox plushy.

“It looks just like that picture on your plane!” She exclaimed.

Trigger studied the toy for a moment “You think it looks like a fox?” he asked incredulously

“Well of course. Why what did you think it is? A dog?”

Trigger shrugged. “I dunno, I always thought of it more as a wolf than anything. Just a bit more aggressive than a fox I would imagine.”

“I’m sorry honey, but I don’t see it.” She said

“Come on, a war wolf is a ton more bad ass. Then just a fox. Those are just dogs who act like cats.” He defended.

She giggled and took his hand. “Fine, whatever it is, I think this plushy reminds me of it, and you a bit too.” She said sweetly.

Trigger rolled his eyes in an exaggerated “I guess that means I’m buying that for you right?” He flirted

“Of course!”

Trigger pulled out his wallet and gestured to the old man to buy the toy. She hugged it closely. “Thank you Trigger.” She said burying her face into the toy.

The couple continued their walk with Cossette happily cradling the stuffed fox in her arm.

Slowly, Trigger could hear a build up of noise, a shrill warbled sound picking up in intensity before falling off again erupted across the city.

An air raid siren? Trigger thought to himself, looking around to the source of the noises. Looking back to Cossette he could see the fear in her eyes.

“We need to go. Now!” He said forcefully, taking Cossette’s hand and breaking off into a run.

“I don’t, but-“ He could hear her stammer confused as he pulled her along. The once tranquil atmosphere of the park had turned into a mad dash to shelters. Trigger strained his ears to listen but noticed a distinct lack of sounds from any aircraft above them. He quickly unlocked the door to the Mercedes sedan, and threw the passenger side door open for Cossette. Even before she could buckle her seat belt he had slammed the door and had ran around to the driver side, the engine roared to life and within a second Trigger had threw the car into gear towards the main road.

Trigger noticed that the streets were largely devoid of vehicles or pedestrians, as the engine roared, and the car sped through the intersections, he caught glimpses of flashing lights from first responders, either unable or unwilling to impede their progress.

Having a moment to catch his breath. He spoke up.

“Where to?” he asked, changing lanes to avoid a stalled minivan in the road.

Cossette took a breath before replying “Royal palace. There’s an air raid shelter. The remaining Generals will also be present for a situation report.” She stated.

“Royal Palace it is.” Trigger said, seeing the speedometer was hovering over two hundred kilometers per hour.

Dammit Andre, you said this place was secure!” Cossette hissed.

Trigger eyed the sky again, it was too dark to see anything, but he also hadn’t heard any tell-tale explosions from bombers yet. It was reminding him of Fort Grays almost a year prior.

“Any chance it’s a drill?” Trigger asked.

“Believe me, if it is, I’ll have the head of whatever asshole interrupted our date for it!” She yelled annoyed.

Trigger smirked, seeing Cossette back to her usual self.

“So, First time?” Trigger asked.

“What do you mean?”

“Air Raid. This your first live one?” Trigger elaborated

“No, I was present for the last three. Except your fighters weren’t terribly accurate.” Cossette said.

Within minutes, Trigger had pulled the car up to the back gate. Erusean soldiers were running around taking defensive positions, search light beams raked the sky in search of the threat.

One of the soldiers seeing the Car held up his hand and pointed his rifle at the couple

Qui êtes vous!” The young soldier barked.

Cossette quickly tore off the hoodie and stepped out of the car. Seeing the Princess the soldier lowered his weapon and barked to his superior.

Trigger assessed the situation for a moment and rolled down the passenger window.

“Cossette!” he shouted to catch her attention. “I’m going to see what’s happening with the Oseans here. You go with the soldiers and stay safe. I’ll be back as soon as I can!” he shouted. She nodded and ran towards the soldiers. Satisfied seeing her retreat into the Palace grounds, Trigger backed away and sped off east towards the heart of the cities financial district and the 101st Headquarters.

***
Trigger stopped the Mercedes outside a concrete Barrier. The Sirens had been blaring for over half an hour by his guess. Now he was close enough to hear the more recognizable alarms of the Osean forces. A constant beeping followed by three quick ‘Incoming’ announcements followed by more beeping.

An Osean Sergeant Held up his hand “Who the fuck goes there!” He bellowed over the ambient chaos.

Trigger pulled out his ID card and held up his hands “Im a Major with the OADF, I came to see if I could help!” he replied. Another soldier quickly scurried from cover and ran to Trigger. Quickly looking at the ID, the Soldier shot up a thumbs up and pulled Trigger to a concrete shelter.

“Colonel Padbury and his staff are in the bank vault. We’ve radioed ahead and let them know your coming.” The Sergeant reported.

Trigger nodded and bolted off to the Bank. Throwing the heavy oak door open, He saw the once busy main concourse was empty, he looked around the room before he noticed a soldier in body armor crouching and waiving him over. Following the soldier, he was guided down a staircase and through increasingly crowded hallways until he reached the main bank vault. Inside sat Colonel Padbury and the rest of his command staff.

“Sir, Major-“ Trigger started

“I don’t give a fuck. What’s the situation outside Major?” Padbury interrupted.

Trigger shook his head. “Not a clue. Nothing has happened except the sirens. I was hoping you knew.”

Padbury laugh was hollow. “We know fuck all Major of what’s happening. Suddenly the sirens are going off and I can’t get a hold of anyone at the air base to see what is going on. Woods gave his men the day off so they’re getting their tanks ready to press into the base.” Padbury explained.

“Does regional HQ know anything?” Trigger asked.

“They’re just as in the dark as we are.”

“So whats the plan aside from Tanks invading the base?”

“Im hoping its just a drill. But since your somewhat familiar with the base and the key officers there, you go with the platoon I’m sending to support the Third.” Padbury ordered

“Yes sir.” Trigger replied making an about face towards the exit.

“Major, One last thing. I cant have you going into Combat in jeans. So you better find a uniform or something before you leave here.” Padbury shouted.

Another officer quickly ran out of the room and returned with a set of Army Combat Uniform trousers and blouse.

Trigger shrugged “Probably fits” he muttered, finding an empty doorway to get changed in.

Trigger returned to the main corridor to see an Osean Army Major awaiting him with a ballistic vest.

“Three Strikes right? Come with me and get this on.” He ordered.

Trigger followed him back out of the building and across to an idling convoy of six Humvees and two Stryker ICVs.

“Major, your riding in my Vehicle.” the Army officer bellowed.

Trigger took his seat in the rear of the vehicle and allowed the sergeant driving to slam the door shut for him.

The Major in charge took a seat, sighed and grabbed the handset radio on the dashboard. “Talon Six-one, we’re Oscar Mike.”

A moment later the Humvee lurched forward and towards out of the firebase.

The convoy sped along the highway at a brisk speed, but still seemed sluggish to Trigger. He noticed the dull tone of the diesel engine drowned out the sirens around them. The radio crackled to life “Bulldog two- three, Oscar Mike to the objective, twenty mikes out” he heard.

Major Kevin Walker grinned at the report and grabbed the microphone. “Attention all Talon victors, our buddies In the Third Armored are finally in this fight. Took them long enough!” he shouted.

Outside of a brief shout or clicks on the radio in response, the ride was eerily quiet. Ten minutes later The Humvees passed a column of Osean M1 Abrams Tanks rolling along the highway towards the mountains.

Minutes later, Trigger could see the Situation at the Erusean Air Base was no better than in the City. The Osean Forces moved through the front gate unchallenged and took up a defensive position outside the bases Operations building.

“Trigger, you go in with Sergeant Hornadys men and make contact with the current commander. Im not taking any fucking chances you hear?” Walker bellowed. Trigger nodded and motioned for a squad of soldiers to follow him.

The Osean forces moved through the corridors of the Operations building finding it deserted. Trigger could see through the darkened windows of the building that many of the aircraft shelters and ramp was empty. Entering the Command Center, Trigger could see dozens of Erusean military moving around frantically and shouting into radios.

Trigger grabbed the closest Erusean Officer, a young enlisted airman from his guess “Qu'est-ce que tu veux?”

“Who’s in charge?” Trigger demanded. Terrified the young Erusean pointed to the heart of the room. Hunched over a table was a younger Hispanic man in a flight suit.

“Asher!” Trigger shouted; the Erusean Pilot looked up in annoyance “Well at least that’s one friendly face I’ve seen today.”

“Any idea what the hell is going on? Where’s the fire?” Trigger asked.

“We just had a shoot down on our front steps” Asher replied.

“Wheres Colonel Andre?” Trigger asked

Question of the fucking hour” Asher hissed “We cant find Pépé anywhere” He added.

“Then who’s in charge?”

“Apparently I am - for whatever that’s worth.” Asher groaned.

Trigger nodded and turned to the Osean Soldiers waiting at the Doorway. “Report to Walker that I’ve made contact with the Eruseans here. Looks to be a real situation.” He ordered, sending the infantry squad away.

“So whats the situation now?”

Asher sighed. “We lost contact with one of our CAP sorties, Radar said they saw a blip and deployed our alert fighters to intercept, Alert saw something and engaged, then CAP saw something and Engaged, and we’ve been seeing sporadic air to air engagements and losses all along this zone here. I currently have all the squadrons committed right now. Looks to be the last throws of the Radicals Air Force by my guess.” Asher reported, motioning to the mountainous region east of Farbanti.

Something about the situation didn’t sit right with Trigger. “Any idea of the enemy force makeup?”

Asher shrugged “Every squadron is encountering something different, Vipers, Fulcrums, Terminators, its like the entire Federation Air Force is up against us.” Asher groaned.

It was a quiet night at the Selatapura Air Base, in a out of the way corner of the airfield sat a hangar that had quickly been cleared out for the temporary new tenants. Basilisk’s Berserker team had wasted no time setting up their new home. Inside was a plywood shoot house, laid out to mimic the interior of the warehouse storing the weapon, as well was parked half a dozen MH-6 ‘Littlebird’ special operations helicopters, and lying in any space in between was sleeping pilots and bearded operators.

Along one wall of the hangar stood the boards with all the intelligence they had gathered from their forward teams on the location. Colonel Byrns strolled silently through the Hangar, finding Berserker teams commander, Captain Sam Norris, walking through the plan one more time.

“I have to say im impressed how quickly you had this setup. Only thing is, did you have to use Army pilots to get you in?” Byrns spoke up behind the Captain.

Norris shrugged turning to face Byrns. “What can I say Colonel, we have a bit more kinship with the Nightstalker’s than we do with ADFSOC. And Besides, the CV-22 would be overkill.” Norris said smiling and shaking Byrns hand.

“I guess that’s understandable then.” Byrns said, taking Norris’ hand. “Whats the plan for tomorrow Captain?” Byrns asked, shifting the Subject.

“First and second element will insert via Littlebird.  Third is running perimeter detail. Fourth has the MH-47 and EOD team in reserve when we secure the asset.” Norris explained.

“And where do my pilots come into play?” Byrns asked.

“Keeping the Airspace clear is most of it. We have our own drones so Targeting Pods shouldn’t be necessary. However please have some Laser guided munitions ready just in case. In the event we can’t secure the asset, we need to make sure it doesn’t leave Selatapura.” Norris said flatly.

“What is the asset anyways? I’m still in the dark on what this is all about.”

“By design Colonel. Less complications that way.” Norris replied tactfully.

The sound of roaring jet engines distracted the two men. “That’s odd” Byrns said slowly. “Doesn’t sound like a regular CAP departure.” Norris added. Byrns walked over to a phone and quickly dialed the airbases command post.

“This is Byrns. Whats going on?” He interrogated.

The monotone voice of Lieutenant Colonel Curtis replied “Orders from Regional HQ, Farbanti is under a potential Air Attack. I sent up alert five as a precaution.” He reported.

Byrns nodded and hung up. “Looks like Farbanti is under another attack.” He said non-committedly

“Another day in paradise.” Norris replied sardonically

“Do you want them ready to go now?” Byrns asked, motioning to the sleeping men and women behind him.  Norris shook his head.

“We’ll need them on their A-game tomorrow. This isn’t anything we could help with. Unless the asset moves tonight, it won’t be any reason to wake them.” He replied.

The situation had deteriorated in the few minutes Trigger had been in the command center. “with them down, where’s that put us?” He could hear Asher mutter.

“Don’t you guys have an AWACS for this reason?” Trigger inquired.

Asher snorted “All of our remaining A-50’s are deployed over Lambert right now. We don’t have the luxury of an Air Battle Manager right now. The best those nuggets have is us.”

“What do you mean nuggets?” Trigger asked dumb founded.

Asher sighed. “All our experienced guys either went with the radicals or are deployed against them right now. Anyone here is either too inexperienced or just assigned to babysitting duty. We didn’t expect this.”

Trigger shook his head in dismay “Making you guys the perfect target for an attack like this.” He groaned.

Work with the air force you have, not the one you want.” Asher said coldly

“Nice sentiment, but from the sounds of it, your getting your asses slaughtered.” Trigger pointed out annoyed.

“What the hell do you want us to do? We can’t even find our own leader; you expect us to ask Osea for help? I wouldn’t even know how!” Asher shouted.

“Wouldn’t know how to do what?” The two men heard a voice interrupt. Asher involuntarily stood up straighter at it. The speaker was heavily accented, and the words sounded awkward and strained.

“Colonel Andre, nice of you to join us.” Asher said annoyed.

“Colonel, with Respect, where the fuck where you?” Trigger hissed. Andre glared at him before walking up to the main desk and glancing at the most recent combat report.

He Paused and then turned his attention back to Asher and Trigger. “Captain Esparza, Get your men airborne and take control of the situation.”

“How sir? It’s a cluster fuck up there.”

“Get them to disengage and return to base. We’re not under attack.”

How can you say that sir?!” Asher replied dumbfounded.

Andre shook his head. “Trust me. If it was an attack, we’d be gone by now. Now go!” He barked.

Asher took a moment to compose himself. “Oui Colonel” He said, making an about face and running out of the room.

“So how do you figure we’re not under attack?” Trigger asked.

“You need to look at the big picture Major. It’s made of smaller pictures like these-“ he held up a combat report for emphasis. “-They are fighting each other. We don’t have the benefit of an advanced IFF anymore, and I’m willing to bet most of them took off without setting the IFF.” Andre said matter-of-factly.

“I don’t see how the hell you came to that conclusion, but I hope your right.” Trigger replied.

Andre ignored the comment.

“Colonel, It does beg the question, where were you tonight?” Trigger asked again.

“Royal palace to brief the Princess on an upcoming operation.” He replied.

“Oh? How was that?”

“Classified.”

“How was the princess then?” Trigger asked subtly. Andre raised an eyebrow. “Under-dressed for a woman of her position.

“I see.” Trigger replied.

“Now someone, will you kill that damn air raid alert!” Andre yelled.

“Your Highness. We’re getting the all clear signal.” Gretchen reported.

Cossette nodded. “Is everyone ok?” She yelled to everyone else in the bunker. Hearing replies to the affirmative she was satisfied.

“Get a Press conference ready. The People need to see that we will not be perturbed by this.” Cossette said determined.

“Also, Get in contact with all local hospitals. While we may not have had any war related injuries, I’m sure they will be busy. We need to make sure they have all the resources they require to handle it.” She added.

“And lastly, I want Trigger and Andre here back in my office tomorrow morning. I need to know what happened here.” She concluded.

“Will that be all Your Highness?” Gretchen asked.

“Yes. Let’s get it done.”

Trigger sat on a bench facing the ramp watching the morning sun crest over the mountains. Off in the distance he could hear the faint whine of an engine spooling down as the last of the Erusean fighters parked on the ramp and shut down.

He was exhausted, physically and mentally. Loosing focus he quickly drifted off to sleep.
